The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and head of the UN Mission to Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, has visited the city of Zawiya.

Bathily met with Zawiya leaders and representatives of the security authorities, saying that Libya has the potential to become a major player in Africa and the Mediterranean basin if Libyans agreed to heal the wounds of the past through comprehensive national reconciliation and a broad political agreement that would unite the country and put it on the path to recovery.

“The discussion, focussed on the future of Libya, was heated at times, but also characterized by respect, civility and tolerance. This type of dialogue is a role model for political leaders who must resolve their differences and reach a comprehensive political agreement”, Bathily tweeted.
