Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah has announced the formation of an emergency committee to oversee the situation in Ghat and its surrounding areas in southwestern Libya and to provide necessary assistance.

The decision highlights the challenging conditions in the areas of Al-Awinat, Tahala, Al-Barkat, and Ghat due to severe weather, including heavy rainfall, storms, and resulting floods and torrents.

The committee -chaired by Minister of Local Government Badr Al-Din Al-Toumi- will monitor the conditions in these areas, offer support, mitigate harm to residents, and report its activities to the Prime Minister.

Dbeibah has also directed the Libyan Post, Telecommunications, and Information Technology Holding Company to promptly act by assigning the Al-Madar and Libyana companies to deploy field teams to maintain communication networks in flood-affected areas.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Tahala, Ahmed Klikili, confirmed that most residents have vacated the city due to flooding of their homes and destruction of their properties.

According to Klikili, floods have engulfed the entire area, submerging all residential neighbourhoods, making it impossible to estimate the extent of material losses.

He urged Libyan institutions to provide assistance, emphasizing that Tahala is grappling with a catastrophic situation, with all residences, the hospital, and the municipality's headquarters submerged. He also noted disruptions in communication and power supply, as well as the city being hit by floods from both the Akakus valleys and Algeria.

Additionally, the Mayor of Al-Qatrun, Omar Amoura, reported the collapse of the Al-Toum border road with Chad and Niger due to the heavy rains affecting Al-Qatrun and the surrounding areas.
