The French President Emmanuel Macron and the Head of the Libyan Presidential Council Fayez Al-Sirraj have seen eye to eye on the need to commit to the results of the conference held in Paris on May 29, when Libyan parties agreed to hold elections by December 10.
Macron and Al-Sirraj spoke on the phone on Sunday and discussed the latest developments in Libya.
Libya’s Prime Ministry’s media office said the two reviewed bilateral relations in different fields, especially in the issue of illegal immigration, in addition to Macron’s reiteration of support for the strategy of the Presidential Council in limiting the flow of migrants.
“We in Libya appreciate the support of the French government and its keenness on achieving stability and peace in the country.” Al-Sirraj said, according to his media office.
Libyan rival parties met at the invitation of Macron in Paris on May 29 in order to end the current political impasse in the country. They all agreed to go to parliamentary and presidential elections on December 10 before which a constitutional basis should be ready by September.
The Paris conference also called on the rival parties and the Libyan officials to commit to the upcoming elections’ results and follow in the footsteps of the action plan of Ghassan Salame – the Head of the UNSMIL. It also saw the rivals agree on holding a conference for following on the agreed points in Paris, with vows to hold the violators accountable.
