The militias of the renegade General Khalifa Haftar killed, in mere cold blood, a retired colonel at the Libyan Army, Mohammed Jaaoda, and his son Tariq in Benghazi on Sunday.
The family of the killed colonel said he refused to depart his house in October 2014 in spite of the departure of his entire family and because of his old age – 80 years – his son Tariq stayed home with him. His family said they called Dignity Operation leaders to open a safe passage for him and his son but no answer was given until the two were moved to a safer area by the fighters of Benghazi Shura Council when security situation got more intense.
When the safety of the new area shrank as Dignity Operation militias advanced into Ganfodah district, the colonel and his son were taken along with the other displaced families to the Teachers’ Summer Resort, which was raided by Haftar’s militias on Sunday leading to the killing of the colonel and his son.
Relatedly, the former General National Congress member, Saleh Jaaoda, who is the colonel’s cousin, said there is no connection between the colonel and any extremist organizations, responding to some justifications posted on pro-Haftar social media and pointing out that preliminary unsure information says the two were shot in the head with signs of torture on their bodies.
Former Congressman Jaaoda called, in a Monday statement, on the Criminal Investigation Department in Benghazi to release the two other sons of the killed colonel, Ali and Rafeeq, who are jailed in there, urging the CID to hand over the bodies of the man and his son to their family for burial.
The security and military personnel of Haftar in Benghazi have not issued any statement regarding the murder up until now.
