The Head of the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) Emad Al-Sayeh said registration for presidential elections ended with 98 candidates submitting their paperwork for the December 24 vote, adding that their documents had been referred to relevant authorities for vetting.
The Head of the HNEC added in a press conference in Tripoli on Tuesday that the preliminary lists of candidates will be published in a day or two to allow appeals to be made, saying this stage of Libya's history has given a civilized image for Libya's future that paves the way for ending chaos and corruption and starting building and stability.
"Some of the documents of the 98 candidates for presidential elections have already been referred to Public Prosecution, Passports and Citizenship Authority for vetting as per Law 1 for presidential elections. The HNEC is also looking into the Military Prosecutor's letter regarding the candidacy of Khalifa Haftar and Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi for presidential elections. Law 1 says the candidates must have no final judicial ruling against them, and Article 12 of the law is a subject that the judiciary will decide on if it receives appeals against candidates (in a clear reference to Prime Minister Abdul-Hamid Dbeibah who by Article 12 cannot run for president as it says candidates must resign from public office 3 months before elections)." According to Al-Sayeh.
He said parliamentary elections' candidates could reach 4000, but so far their number reached 1766, adding that the number of voters who received their cards had also increased, which indicates active turnout for the vote on December 24, expecting that two million voters could receive their cards before elections.
"HNEC will validate the recommendations brought by the candidates in a random way because it's not possible to check all of the recommendations." Al-Sayeh said.
