The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aqila Saleh, considered that the reason for the stalemate in the political process is the force majeure declared by the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) in 2021, not the Parliament, adding during his meeting with the Speaker of the Italian House of Representatives, Lorenzo Fontana, in Rome that the HoR had performed its duty in the best possible way and issued, in consultation with the High Council of State, the laws for the election of the president and parliament and handed them over to the HNEC.
Saleh also stressed Libya's need for a new, unified government whose primary mission is to conduct presidential and parliamentary elections, according to the media center of the HoR Speaker, saying he discussed with his Italian counterpart strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries, stressing that the friendship treaty signed in August 2008 in the city of Benghazi was the beginning of a new phase of cooperation, and that the political, economic and legislative role of the Italian Parliament "is important to activate and develop the provisions of the treaty."
According to the media center, Saleh asked the Italian Speaker to pardon the Libyan prisoners in Italy, or send them to Libya to serve their sentences, in addition to his request to invite the Libyan Attorney General to reach an understanding and consultation on the affairs of the Libyan prisoners in Italy. He also discussed the issue of illegal immigration, stressing that the solution lies in the presence of development in the source countries, as Libya is a transit country, indicating that he had directed relevant authorities to cooperate with the Italian authorities to combat illegal immigration.
The HoR Speaker also stressed the need to communicate with the Director General of the Development and Reconstruction Fund, Belgassim Haftar, and it was agreed that he would visit Rome to participate with Italy in the reconstruction process taking place in the country.
