Libya reiterated the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the establishment of their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.
This came in a speech by the advisor at the Permanent Mission of Libya to the United Nations, Hatem Al-Thalab, during the general discussion of the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Affairs Committee at the United Nations in its 79th session.
The statement also condemned the heinous crimes committed by the Israeli occupation against the Palestinian people, who have been suffering from the most atrocious policies of racial discrimination since the Nakba of 1948.
It highlighted the suffering of the Palestinians during the ongoing aggression on the Gaza Strip, stressing the need to hold the entity accountable and to achieve justice for Palestinians.
Meanwhile, Libya called for taking effective measures to combat all forms of racial discrimination and xenophobia and to confront all forms of discrimination and racism. It referred to the long history of persecution suffered by the African continent, indicating that the consequences of that dark era still haunt the peoples of the continent, as they have not yet recovered from the effects of colonialism.
Libya called on former colonial powers to acknowledge their moral responsibilities toward the peoples of the continent and to take the initiative to provide fair compensation for the damages inflicted on Africans.
The statement shed light on the bigotry and prejudice against Islam and Muslims, which has been reinforced under the pretext of freedom of expression, noting the need for the United Nations to remain united against attempts to embrace Islamophobia, regardless of its forms, whether in the form of a travel ban imposed on Muslim countries, or the burning and desecration of the Quran, or the ban on the hijab and Islamic symbols.
