In a statement on the Libyan House of Representatives (HoR) and High Council of State (HCS) consultations hosted in Morocco over the last two days, the US ambassador and special envoy, Richard Norland, said that efforts are still needed to bring the parties closer, hoping due consideration will be given by each side to the legitimate concerns expressed by the other.
"If parliamentary and presidential elections are to proceed on December 24 in order to put in place a lasting legitimate government for Libya, the process must move forward now so candidate registration and other aspects of implementation can begin." Norland said.
He added that no individual or institution should have veto power over critical electoral legislation; rather, Libya’s institutions and their leaders must trust the voters to decide who should lead the country.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) hailed the HoR and HCS delegations for the positive atmosphere of the meeting and seconds their “call on the international community to support the electoral process in Libya based on agreed laws and on the outcomes of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum and to guarantee the respect of electoral results through the provision of international observers”.
