The United Nations expressed its conviction, through its Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, that the Italian Mattei Plan for Africa is an opportunity to support African countries, including Libya and Tunisia, in confronting the phenomenon of illegal immigration, according to AKI News Agency.
“Immigration is necessary, but it must be organized,” Guterres said in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Repubblica on Thursday. In this context, Mattei’s plan could be an opportunity, not only to fight the root causes that force people to make dangerous journeys, but also to support the African countries that host the majority of people fleeing crises.
Mattei Plan, which bears the name of Enrico Mattei, founder of the Italian energy giant Eni, focuses on stopping illegal immigration flows from the coasts of North Africa, especially Libya and Tunisia, as well as on diversifying supply chains to ensure energy security and achieve economic development.
