Assistant Secretary-General and Special Adviser on Internal Displacement Robert Piper praised the efforts of the Government of National Unity to address internally displaced persons during his visit to the country late last year.

Piper's remarks came during a meeting with Libya's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Taher Al-Sunni, on Monday.

The parties discussed the UN's approach towards internal displacement and the progress made by Libya in this file.

Piper stressed the need to restructure UN support and address the issue of internally displaced persons comprehensively, linking it to peacebuilding. He also praised the government and national authorities for their support and local reconciliations.

Furthermore, the UN official noted that the number of internally displaced persons has significantly increased globally and that the current tools are insufficient to address this problem.
