The Foreign Ministry decried Wednesday the extremists in Sweden who burned copies of the Holy Quran, saying such acts constitute a deliberate provocation to Muslim sentiments.

"While the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation condemns this shameful act, it calls for the consolidation of the values of coexistence and tolerance among the revealed religions and urges the international community to assume its responsibilities and take a serious stand against these unacceptable acts," the Foreign Ministry stated.

Sweden has seen unrest since last week after a far-right group burnt copies of the Holy Quran during an anti-Islam rally organized in a neighbourhood in Malmo, south of Sweden, where large numbers of immigrants resided.
