Libya has renewed its categorical rejection of Sweden allowing an extremist to desecrate the Qu’ran under police protection.

"The desecrating of a copy of the Qu'ran by an extremist in front of the Iraqi embassy in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, represents a hate crime against Islam and is deeply insulting to Muslims around the world," Libya's Foreign Ministry said in a statement Friday.

Denouncing the government's action in Sweden, the Foreign Ministry underscored that such "intolerable acts" run counter to the values of dialogue and demonstrate a lack of respect for sanctuaries and culture.

"The Government of National Unity calls on the International community to work together to confront decisively such heinous acts and forge a united front to address the growing extremist currents that threaten the peaceful and cultural coexistence of nations," the statement concluded.
