The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expressed on Tuesday its concern over the kidnapping and disappearance of Rida Al-Freites, the director of the office of the First Deputy Prime Minister, and his colleague in Tripoli.

The UNSMIL said in a statement that unidentified gunmen “kidnapped” Al-Freites with his colleague, on August 2, after their visit to the government headquarters in Tripoli, adding that their fate is still unknown.

The mission expressed concern that individuals who had a role in supporting the democratic transition in Libya and state institutions were being targeted in this way, warning that these practices may have serious repercussions on the peace and reconciliation process and on the complete unification of national institutions.
