Audit

The Audit Bureau has ordered the National Oil Corporation (NOC) to suspend the redevelopment of Martyrs' Square in Tripoli, citing the need to review the project's legal and technical compliance.

In a letter dated December 2, Deputy Head of the Audit Bureau, Atiyallah Al-Saiyti, called on NOC Chairman Farhat Bengdara to pause the $6.85 million project. The move follows Cabinet Resolution No. 584 of 2024, which authorized the direct contracting for the square's redevelopment.

The bureau emphasized that such decisions affecting the central landmark of Tripoli, Libya’s capital, should not be made without thorough review.

The decision comes amid growing concerns from the Libyan Architecture Authority, which recently called for an urgent meeting of officials, engineers, and planners to address potential negative impacts on Martyrs' Square during redevelopment efforts.

Last week, Tripoli's Security Directorate announced road closures around the square, including sections of Omar Al-Mukhtar Street, due to ongoing works.
