The Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Abdoulaye Bathily, has called on Libyan women to pool their efforts to support elections and speak publicly about their demands for the country.

His comments came at a meeting on Sunday grouping female election candidates, academics, members of municipal councils, civil society actors, and activists to discuss his new initiative on elections.

“It’s important for women to have their voices heard in the political space, free from harassment or any form of threat,” Bathily said.

He confirmed that Libya has all the resources and potential to overcome the present stalemate, provided people take responsibility and action.

On their part, the women called for increasing women’s representation in the political process, including in elections preparations and as candidates, according to the UNSMIL.
