Amnesty International warned on Friday that life of hundreds of local and foreign civilians in Benghazi’s Ganfouda neighborhood is in danger following months of blockade and air bombing by Dignity Operation militia groups.
The international human rights group said the trapped civilians have been cut off from the outside world with no food, water and electricity supplies.
“Time is running out for civilians in Ganfouda, who are being left to die trapped by the fighting. While bombs and shells continue to rain down on them, civilians are struggling to survive on rotten food and dirty water. And the sick and wounded must make do with dwindling supplies of expired medicines,” said Magdalena Mughrabi, Deputy Director of the Middle East and North Africa Programme at Amnesty International.
Dignity Operation, supported by foreign countries, intensified airstrikes and shelling on Ganfouda leaving hundreds dead and wounded.
Many international organizations including the UN Mission in Libya have appealed for the creation of safe corridors to evacuate civilians, but Dignity Operation refused.
Dignity Operation supporters in Benghazi have called for killing of all besieged families in Ganfouda, claiming they are all terrorists.
