The Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) said on X she had met with the First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR), Fawzi Al Nuwairi, at the HoR office in Tripoli.
"During our discussion, I provided an overview of the UNSMIL-facilitated political process and emphasized the urgent need to advance it without delay. We also agreed on the critical importance of unifying sovereign oversight institutions to promote transparency, enhance accountability, and combat corruption effectively." Koury said.
She indicated that they had also discussed the need to address the arbitrary detention and other human rights concerns countrywide, while they agreed on the necessity of cohesive international support for the UN-facilitated process to ensure sustainable solutions and pave the way for national elections.
A few days ago, the First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Fawzi Al-Nuwairi, issued a strongly worded statement in which he stressed the need not to rely on the UN mission to address the Libyan crisis, noting that continued reliance on it represents a waste of time, and he explained that the mission's failure to find a radical solution to the Libyan crisis is conclusive evidence that the solution will not come from outside. Al-Nuwairi added that the House of Representatives completely rejects dealing with the UN mission as a facilitator or mediator in the Libyan crisis.
