Libya called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip on Monday, urging the international community to protect the Palestinian people in the besieged territory and allow the entry of humanitarian aid.

The call came in a speech delivered by the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Taher Al-Baour, via video conference at the opening of the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC55).

Al-Baour stressed the need for an immediate ceasefire to end the violence and bloodshed in Gaza and to allow the entry of humanitarian aid to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people.

He also called on the international community to take responsibility for protecting civilians and holding Israel accountable for its crimes.

The HRC55 six-week session will focus on a number of human rights issues, including the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories.
