Libyan Grand Mufti Sheikh Sadiq Al-Gharyani has commended the peace agreement signed between Tripoli districts of Tajoura and Souq Al-Joma’a, urging the latter to work for the release of prisoners who are held at Mitiga prison unjustly.
In his weekly program on Tanasuh TV, the Mufti demanded the Presidential Council government and the UN mission in Libya to resolve the problem of Mitiga prison, which is run by the Special Deterrence Force, after reports of human rights violations being committed inside the prison.
“If the UN and the government are keen to stop the war and prevent its causes, they should resolve the problem of Mitiga prison where human rights violations are being committed as mentioned in the UN panel of experts report.” He said.
The Mufti’s remarks come after the reconciliation agreement reached Monday between Tajoura and Souq Al-Joma’a districts, which saw the release of a group of Tajoura residents who were arrested by the Special Deterrence Force after Mitiga airport incidents last June.
The arrests sparked tension between the two sides and initiated tit-for-tat arrests, which led some angry locals to block the main roads linking the two districts.
Meanwhile, the Special Deterrence Force released Wednesday 83 prisoners arbitrarily detained or have passed their pre-trial detention period.
On Tuesday, the Presidential Council announced the release of 25 prisoners held by the Special Deterrence Force illegally.
