The Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Libya, Nicola Orlando, stressed the need to renew efforts facilitated by the United Nations to maintain the unity of the High Council of State "as a precondition for a balanced political process".
This came during a meeting with Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Stephanie Koury, in the capital, Tripoli, where Orlando said he had fruitful exchange of views in Tripoli with Koury on the political and security dynamics in Libya.
He welcomed the progress made in resolving the Central Bank crisis, noting his and Koury's agreement on the need for all parties concerned to avoid unilateral actions and commit to dialogue and consensus to restore the legitimacy and unity of all institutions.
Orlando reiterated the European Union's support for Koury's efforts to advance "a comprehensive and inclusive political process that addresses the main drivers of the conflict and paves the way for national elections".
The crisis of the High Council of State's presidency elections has been in a stalemate since August 6, when the run-off round to elect the Head between Mohamed Takala and Khalid Al-Mishri witnessed controversy over the legality of one of the members’ votes after writing Mohamed Takala’s name in a place other than the designated one on the ballot paper.
