The Minister of Finance of the UN-proposed government, Osama Hammad, was bitterly told off by social media activists in Libya after his decision to appoint 48 bodyguards was circulated among the internet users.
Hammad’s order No.22 of 2017 was issued on January 17. It said that 48 bodyguards will be on a three-shift rota every day to protect him.
“The first shift will include 18 bodyguards; each will receive LYD1000 a month. The second will consist of 14 ones, each receiving LYD750 a month and the last shift will have 16 bodyguards and each one of them will receive LYD500 per month.” Hammad’s order reads, making the amount paid for all of them every month LYD36.000.
“How could a minister do such a corrupt action carelessly while people in the country are suffering from tens of issues like lack of cash and soaring prices at the markets?” Some social media activists said, lashing out at the minister, whom they accused of nepotism.
Hammad was sourly criticized over being detached from reality appointing 48 men with 36.000 dinars to guard him while people have no electricity and no money to provide for their families.
Hammad, who was nominated for his post by the Presidential Council’s member Fathi Al-Mijibri, was appointed as the Head of Energy Authority at Al-Thanni-chaired eastern government before he occupied the post of the Financial Minister at the UN-proposed government.
