The Italian agency Nova said that the European Commission did not deny or confirm the news regarding the Libyan Government of National Unity's refusal to appoint Italian diplomat Nicola Orlando as the new ambassador of the European Union to Libya.

The spokeswoman for the European Union Commission for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Nabila Massrali, told Nova that the Commission would publish the name of its new ambassador in Tripoli after completing all procedures and obtaining approval for the appointment.

Nova cited Libyan sources as saying that the Government of National Unity had refused to appoint Italian diplomat Nicola Orlando as ambassador to the European Union in Tripoli. The decision was taken a few weeks ago, Nova said, noting that he was serving as Italy's special envoy in Libya in 2021.

Orlando held the position of Deputy Italian ambassador to Libya from 2017 to 2019, and was appointed in May 2021 as special envoy of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Libya.
