The High National Elections Commission (HNEC) has announced the extension of voter registration for the second round of municipal elections to April 6.
In a statement, the HNEC attributed the extension to the low turnout for registration, which began on February 22, as well as weak awareness campaigns due to a funding shortfall estimated at 30 million dinars, of which the Government of National Unity has only provided 15 million, despite repeated calls.
The statement indicated that the lack of funding raises questions about the commission's ability to complete the stages of the second round of municipal elections. It also called on citizens to take advantage of the "relatively long" extension, which coincides with the end of Ramadan, to register via text message or in person.
