The Minister of Transportation of the Government of National Unity, Mohammed Al-Shahoubi, requested Germany's assistance to lift the ban on Libyan airliners in European airspace, as well as to resume flights between the two countries. This request came during his reception of the new German Ambassador to Libya, Ralph Tarraf, accompanied by the Embassy's Economic Affairs Officer.
The Ministry of Transport said that Al-Shahoubi called for activating joint cooperation between the two countries and for German companies to return to work in Libya.
It added that the German Ambassador had expressed his thanks for the warm reception and his happiness to work in Libya, stressing his readiness to cooperate in all fields to strengthen relations between the two countries.
Al-Shahoubi's request for German assistance comes four days after Libyan Airlines and Afriqiyah Airways announced the use of the European airspace through Greece and Malta on their flights from Istanbul to Mitiga Airport in Tripoli, noting the role of the Ministry of Transportation, and the Civil Aviation Authority for their efforts in reopening this route.
On June 22, the European Commission extended its decision to prevent Libyan airlines from operating in European airports, keeping them on the European Union's aviation blacklist. The last renewal of the ban by the European Commission was in January 2022, which confirmed ongoing concerns about safety and security in the country.
