The Minister-designate of Interior of the Government of National Unity, Emad Al-Trabelsi, discussed with the Director of the Regional Office of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Othman Al-Belbisi, IOM's work in Libya in relation to the voluntary return of illegal immigrants.
According to a statement on the ministry’s Facebook page, the meeting reviewed the target numbers for 2024, and the development of an immigration policy strategy, since Libya is one of the most important points in the path of crossing to Europe.
The meeting, which was attended by the Head of the Anti-Illegal Immigration Authority, Mohammed Al-Khoja, and the Head of the Border Guard Apparatus, Mohammed Al-Marhani, discussed the problems of granting exit visas to those who are targeted for voluntary return, and providing technical and financial support in order to undermine the phenomenon of illegal immigration, and to come up with a unified vision regarding voluntary return.
The two sides also talked about the Libyan Prime Minister’s decision No. (439) of 2023 regarding the formation of a committee to register expatriate workers, organize their presence in Libya, grant residency, and give the opportunity to register and organize expatriate workers according to the needs of the local market.
Libya is currently hosting the Conference of Labor Ministers of the Community of Sahel-Saharan States under the slogan “A Safe Mediterranean and a Stable South", which discusses unemployment and immigration issues in African countries.
The Conference activities is held over two days, and the first day’s work focused on discussing the unemployment situation in member states and the solutions proposed by each country as well as exchanging experiences in this regard.
The second day’s work will focus on the possibility of establishing a mechanism for exchanging information, data and research between member states through establishing a job and rehabilitation center.
