Libya has welcomed the UN Security Council's resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and supporting the delivery of humanitarian aid.

In a statement Monday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of National Unity (GNU) reiterated the need for the international community and all parties to fulfil their responsibilities towards the Israeli aggression against Gaza.

The Foreign Ministry affirmed "Libya's steadfast stance in all Arab and international forums calling for effective action to achieve a permanent and lasting cessation of aggression against Gaza and contribute to alleviating the suffering of Palestinians."

The statement also underscored Libya's support for the Palestinian people's pursuit of their right to establish their independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the two-state solution, the Arab Peace Initiative, and international legitimacy resolutions.

On Monday, the UN Security Council passed a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire. The United States, which had previously blocked the resolution multiple times, abstained from voting this time.

The resolution, which garnered a majority of 14 votes in favour with one abstention, has put forth a call for a ceasefire throughout the month of Ramadan, with the ultimate goal of achieving a permanent ceasefire. It also strongly urged the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.
